Is Seeing Believing?

As I went downstairs to pick up my mail, I found the box stuffed with flyers, advertising circulars, coupons, and various kinds of bills but not regular mail inside. Like our regular mailbox, we do receive a great amount of unsolicited mail or junk mail in the electronic mailbox such as Yahoo Mail or Gmail. Oftentimes we throw out or delete junk mail even without looking at it. “It also increasingly cynical about everything else—ready to dismiss it, unthinkingly, as junk or fluff or spin, . . .,” said Kakutani as he doubts the trustfulness of advertisements. Do you agree or disagree with Kakutani’s statement? Is seeing believing in terms of ads?

  1. Somtimes, I think we have to think twice about the advertisement. That is a business commercial. They want to attract more people to buy their products. It would be exaggeration. For instance, it has appear the diet advertisement. It dicates if you follow the diet center you could be lost your weight within a few weeks.I don’t think that isn’t a consistant way. Seeing is believing could consider according to the different thing.

  2. I agree with Kakutani’s opinion because I have the same situation and feeling like him. Every time opening my mailboxes, there are so many junk mails which make me feel impatient. Although experts create some programs to reduce the rates of getting junk mails, sometimes I still have to filtrate in order not to miss some important mails. Looking the subtitles of them, you can find that there are so many various walks of life use ad mails, such us clothes, cosmetic, and even sexual websites to reach their goals but that make people wonder the reality and maybe seeing is not believing. Some of junk mails conceal virus or Trojan horse which make your computer crash. They use normal subtitles to make you click in without alert. What mails you look safe maybe are dangerous so every time receiving ad mails, I dare not click in.

I guess this phenomenon will go on, but there are some ways advertisers can change the way to advertise. In my opinion, the resent advertisers focus on the amount of the ads instead of the quality of the ads. For example, do you like to watch a same ad over and over again or you like to watch a creative ad? If the ad is creative enough, do the advertisers have to be afraid that no one sees the ads? It is a modern society now, quality is more important than quantity.

A good advertisement has three good points, conception, idea and material. Especiall, the conception only is the best, some people so greed, they want their ad prefer many good point. But it’s usually not good. I even saw a great ad was about clothing. The story’s conception is a great tailoring, the idea only little hands could do great clothing, and the the material a man has little hands. This ad is prefer very good.

I agree with Kakutani’s statement. Most of the ads are too exaggerating to believe. It was a kind of being cheated when my father and I rushed to the mall to buy a cell phone with the bargain price, the salesman just shruged his shoulder and replied: “Well, it is already sold out!” “Are you sure? It is the first day of the bargain period!” my father asked. The purpose of their selling strategies is to attract people’s attention and then claim that the products have already sold out but advise you to buy others that are labeled as no bargain or walk around to purchase some daily necessities. The mall manager believes that families’ careful calculation and strict budgeting will drive them to consume the other goods that they originally do not plan to purchase. However, this theory does not work in my father. He walked to the cashier directly and then went back home without buying anything. Seeing is beliving that really reinforce my experience.

  6. Yes, I can’t agree more about “seeing is believing”. We can watch many kind of advertisemnet on television, radio, flyers or something else in anytime and anywhere. However, when the time I need something I would take thses ads as reference only. I still will go to the real store to buy the things I need. However, ads still have it’s effect; it will effect the way I considerate and the item I saw first. It means if I see the item I saw on the ad and I will consider it first, until meet the better one.

I agree with this sentence”Seeing is believing”. When I open my mailbox, just like TJ said, there are many junk mail in the box, even though the mailbox on the internet. Nowadays, there are many advertisements are not be trusted anymore. When people see these kind of mails, their first step is to ignore these mails and throw them in the trash can. People do not believe the commercials at last they see the true product behind their eyes, they can touch it or they won’t believe the pictures on the paper.

  8. I agree Kakutani’s statement. I think there are too many flyers on the street which showing you can lose 10 kilograms in a month by eating this medicine. It looks impossible but there are still some people believe it. Although these ads are already prohibited by government, they change the style but also lie to customers. However, if the ads could encourage people, I think they are good advertisements. Just like Jason post above, I feel depressed but believe there is nothing we can’t solve if we try our best. It is the advantage.

The situation of ads overwhelming our mail box gets worst and worst these years. The mail box from our apartment, websites and even the private place, our cell phone, could not avoid the attack from ads! But I am the person likes to read or watch ads and commercials because some of them were full creativity and imagination. Though I like to read ads but I still agree with Kakutani’s statement because most of the ads are not telling the truth or not entirely the truth. We consumer, have to be careful and smart at the same time. Cannot believe what you see on the ads.

I agree with Kakutani’s statement. Because we always get in touch with advertisements such as streets, TV programs and so on. In these ads we can find that the ads are often exaggerating their products. They use different methods to brag the functions to convince us to buy their products. In my opinion, the invisible products are lies. I do not trust them anymore. Because I just believe “seeing is believing.”

I agree with Kakutani’s statement. When I set in my mailbox, I always throw out junk mails first because they will affect me to find the real important mails or lose something information which I really need. If I have to buy the things which I want, I will prefer to go to real stores. Although ads may make this product bring positive effect, I still think that seeing is believing.

I agree with Kakutani. Every time my parents go down stair to take our letters from mail box and they also bring some ads too. Sometimes they may looking through these ads, but in most of time, they just recycle them. I have a same situation too. When I open my e-mail box, I can see thousands of ads! Now the letters in my e-mail box is approximately 4000, and more than half of them are junk mails, so I feel there are too much ads in our life indeed! Some website offer a function which can prevent junk mails however, those ads still appears in my mail box. So I think in this modern and commercial society, avoid ads or commercials are too hard to do. No wonder some people just throw out or delete without looking.

No, I do not agree that seeing is believing. Sometimes we can not trust what we see, that we van explain why there is a noun named camouflage. It means people use certain to cheat you by special technique. For example, the magic show is the best example. Does anyone believe the magician and believe the tricks they show? I think the answer is no, right~ so, like don’t judge a book by its cover. No not the fist sight we see, to understand and to know so you can judge more rational.

  14. Is seeing believing? I totally disagree with this opinion because sometimes I have the same situation and feeling so bad. Every time I open my mailboxes, there are so many junk mails which make me feel impatient. I have to check each of them and make sure I didn’t lose any important mails although every mail looks so attractive and useful. When you click them and start to read, you will found that they are all the useless mails. On the TV show and news even newspaper. We always can see many rates or dates show the hard situations in this society. Some scared data like how high calories about junk food have or how terrified and harmful for your body about genetic food? But are they all are real data, if they are fake or created, what the benefits or disadvantage that you learn from them. I think that is more important to raise ability to tell what is true or false.

I agree with Kakutani’s statement. Every time I open mailbox of my home, I always find there are many leaflets. I always ignore and throw into the trash can. For example, more and more people cheat recently because they follow the advertisements’ tips to remit their money to scam clan. Also, there are many advertisements in the mailbox of the Internet. Some of the advertisements have virus and it will let your computer crash. Therefore, do not believe the advertisements.
