The Death Penalty Controversy

It has been controversial regarding the abolitionor retention of the death penalty for quite a while in Taiwan. Many human rights groups have long campaigned for abolition of the death penalty such as Amnesty International, the Taiwan Association for Human Rights, the Judicial Reform Foundation, the Catholic Church as well as a number of smaller non-governmental organizations. These groups basically claim that no one has the right to kill another one. In contrast, public opinion polls conducted in 2006 showed that 80 percent of respondants were opposed to abolition of the death penalty. They view the death penalty as the solution for violent crime. What about you? Are you in favor of or againt banning the death penalty?

  1. I against banning the death penalty very much. If our government ban the death penalty, the society will be disorder. For instance, if 陳進興 who is a terrible murder many years ago didn’t die so far, many people would suffer bacome victims. In my opinion, the criminals have wrong conception on many aspects and they can not change after putting jails for many years or because of one’s suggestion. So even if they are arrested, they will also make the same fault in the future. The death penalty is also have another benefit. It can be a warning to others. If the government excutes any laws including the death penalty, people lived there will be more law-abiding. In short, I against banning the death penalty .

  2. I am againt banning the death penalty. There are something improper now. First of all, if there are some chances for those malefactors to survive after they do some serious malefaction, the crime rates will be rised. Because everyone will think there are some opportunities to be forgiven even though they really commit big crimes. Secondly, if persons who would like to do something bad understand what earnest punishments they will get, it can decrease the commit rates. The punishments can be viewed as warnings. Finally, we should pay more attention to how to prevent those malefaction happen instead of concerning who has the rights to kill another one. Therefore, in my opinion banning the death penalty is not appropriate now.

  3. I strongly disagree with the prohibition of death penalty. When I Imagine if one of my family members or a very close friend was killed by a person, I would definitely not be able to stand for the sentence without the death penalty. Fortunately, I have never lost my relatives by any crimes. However, no matter how many times the human rights can be claimed its importance and motality, I think it cannot always help people’s mind keeps in calm. Moreover, it can possibly be a much dangerous society as long as the death penalty is being forbidden. The option of being in jails is not appropreate to every criminal; some of criminals do not feel guilty for their malefactions. For these reasons, I can not support the human rights groups and their idea for the punishment.

  4. I am strongly against banning the death penalty. A person who was pronounced a sentence of death should be a murderer or did something illegal and seriously. According to the research paper, a person who kills someone should have some psychological problems. So, if the death penalty was been abolished, murderer will be released. But we can not sure if murderer hurt other people again or not. Maybe, some murderer just takes killing as fun. And I think the death penalty can promote the public order. So, I support the death penalty execute continually.

  5. I don’t agree that we should abolish the death penalty. First, the criminal who was judged for the death penalty must murder people on purpose basically. In justice of principle, the convicts deprive the inncence’s life, it is fair that they should have be limited their right and freedom. Secondly, we all know we cannot do evil things such as killing the people or murdering when we was young or in the school time. But the criminals still do such things. It means that it is useless for them to obey the general rules. If the laws have no heavy penalties, it has no warning to prohibit the criminal. Thirdly, Some people suggest that using the life imprisonment replaces the death penalty. However, it wastes much money for offering the convicts, and some people think that why we should spend our money to keep the people who caused panic in the society. Besides, because of woman’s soft nature, many people consider that we should give the criminals the opportunities. But the innocences would not have other choice to revive. In addition, we don’t have the sturdy legal system in our society. So, if we forbid the death penalty, we will have worse security in our surroundings.

  6. I agree with the abolition of death penalty. Because of three reasons, first, standing on human rights, everyone has chance to turn over a new leaf. Especially for criminals, most of them realize their faults after they are arrested. So the abolition of death penalty maybe is a great opportunity for criminals to repent to pathic or their family. Second, according to an old saying goes”reprisal breeds reprisal; when it comes to end?” We can not through “death penalty” to solve problems. And we also should change the ideas about “talion”or “retaliation” in solving problems. Third, someone maybe be say that standing on pathic’s family view, abolishing death penalty is unfair to them. However, some folks can really forgive criminal in the end. So why can’t we or outsiders do that? To sum up, according to human rights, old saying and so on, I agree to abolish the death penalty.

  7. I am against banning the death penalty. Those criminal who are adjudged into death penalty might make the worst crimes. So to be adjudged into death penalties are their own decisions. When they make crimes, they lose their human right, so they don’t have any right to avoid the death penalty. If the death penalty is banned, the number of bad guys would increase not decrease. So, I strongly against banning the death penalty.

  8. I am againt banning of the death penalty. First reason is that the death penalty extinguishes the possibility of rehabilitation and redemption of the perpetrator. They have no second chance to repent and start anew. There is a example, the student of National Tsing Hua University, Hung Hsiao-huei who murdered her classmate and mutilated the body in a case involving a love triangle 10 years ago. She served at the Kaohsiung Women’s Prison. She has a record of good behavior and even teaches fellow inmates English and other subjects. Her case demonstrates that not all criminal are impenitent and criminal can still do the right things. Furthermore, the death penalty creates secondary victims, specifically the family and friends of the executed.Third, the death penalty maybe just is an institutional refusing pardon and also an idea about revenge. And it can’t solve the really problems at enough. And what if the wrongful convictions executions of innocent people?the death penalty could cause irreparable mistakes. Since the reasons above, I am againt banning of the death penalty.

  9. I don’t agree abolish the death penalty. I think executing the death penalty can reduce the crime rate. Therefore, it has the function of precaution to people. If people notice that committing some crimes would be sentenced the death penalty, they would think twice before committing that crime. Accordingly, the crime rate will descend. Another reason is that the criminal kills men, that is to say, he ignores their human right. In this way, their lives should be deprived, too. It is fair to let them to pay for their crime and let the law executor to deprive their lives. For the sake of our security, the capital punishment should not be abolished and exist forever.

  10. I am strongly against banning the death penalty. If a person kills people at his pleasure and he doesn’t pay the same cost, the society will disorder. Although we have right to live, we cannot do whatever we want. We have to punish the bad man for what he has done in our society. I don’t want to see innocent people killed by someone with no reason and the killer won’t be punished at the same cost. I do not agree with the prohibition of banning death penalty.

  11. I am strongly against banning the death penalty.A life for a life this will never changed in my mind. When you kill somebody you should pay the same prise. If not many people may think killing one person is not big deal just be a prisoner. If the goverment take away the death penalty there will be many crime at all ,so I do not agree with the prohibition of banning death penalty.

  12. I totally agree the death penalty. Because I believe that it can stop the decreasing crime rate. Some criminals do the bad things again and again, but they only get a slight punishment. No wonder this society become so evil. It all owing to the punishment is too slight for them so that they do it again and again. This is all about punishment won’t hurt them a lot. Those bad guys thought that doing bad things is not a big deal. So, I support the death penalty in my opinion.
