David Copperfield // Authur: Charles Dickens (Charles John Huffam Dickens)
1. David Copperfield was the first child of Clara Copperfield and David Copperfield Senior, who died six months before David was born. He was born in Blunderstone, Suffolk where he lived with his mother and Clara Pegotty. Betsy Trotwood, an aunt of David’s father, was present at his birth but on hearing the child was a boy she left and returned to her home in Dover.
2. When he was nine years old David’s mother remarried to a man named Edward Murdstone, who then brought his sister Jane Murdstone to live with them. David took a dislike to the Murdstones and because of this his relationship with his mother deteriorated but he remained close to Pegotty. Mr Murdstone often beat David and it was during one of these beatings that David bit Mr Murdstone, who then decided to send David to boarding school.
3. David was sent to a boarding school called Salem House. It was run by an old friend of Mr Murdstone called Mr Creakle, who is described as taking pleasure from beating and humiliating the boys. It is here that David befriends James Steerforth and Thomas Traddles, both of whom David would meet again later on in his life. On his return home during the school holidays David found that his mother had given birth to another son, whose name is never known. David returns to Salem House but is soon informed by Mr Creakle that his mother and brother have died. On hearing this news David returns home. David is then withdrawn from Salem House and sent to work in a factory.
4. During his time at the factory, David suffered poor working conditions and an inadequate wage. He lodges with a man named Wilkins Micawber, who David befriends along with is wife and four children. However, Micawber is forced to leave London due to his financial situation. Although David finds other lodgings he becomes increasingly lonely and makes the decision to run away.
5. David then walks from London to Dover in the hope that his great-aunt Betsy Trotwood would help him. On his arrival at Dover David finds his aunt’s house and despite his ragged appearance he persuades his aunt to let him into her house, where she lives with her maid and a lunatic called Richard Babley who is more commonly known as Mr Dick. On his arrival David’s aunt writes to Edward Murdstone to inform him of David’s whereabouts. Murdstone offers to take the boy back but Trotwood keeps him despite Murdstone’s insistence that David has a rebellious nature.
6. David is then sent to a private school in Canterbury, which is run by Dr Strong. David lodges with his aunt’s lawyer and friend Mr Wickfield who has a daughter called Agnes who is roughly the same age as David. David and Agnes become very close. It is during this time that David meets Mr Wickfield’s clerk Uriah Heep who David soon becomes suspicious of.
7. Soon after leaving school David meets his old friend James Steerforth. They travel to Yarmouth together. Upon arriving there they find that Little Em’ly has become engaged to her cousin Ham Pegotty. However James persuades Little Em’ly to run away with him leaving Daniel and Ham Pegotty devastated. Both of them bear the loss with dignity and reticence and Daniel soon sets out to find her.
8. Soon after this David’s aunt comes to London from Dover and tells David she is financially ruined and has had to sell her house. Upon leaving school David starts his career as a proctor apprenticed to Mr Spenlow. David soon falls in love with his daughter Dora Spenlow. It is here that David encounters Jane Murdstone again who acts as a guardian and companion to Dora. David and Dora become engaged. Dora’s father finds out about the engagement from Miss Mordstone. He then threatens to disinherit Dora if she does not stop seeing David. Soon after he dies in a carriage accident. David and Dora get married soon after. Dora is described as immature and when the couple are married she is more interested in her dog Jip than domestic affairs. It is during his marriage to Dora that David first pursues a career as an author. Dora soon becomes pregnant with their first child but miscarries. She was left greatly weakened by this and during her illness she was nursed by David’s old maid Clara Pegotty. She died soon after on the same day as her dog Jip. Meanwhile James Steerforth returns to London without Little Em’ly. An old friend of Little Em’ly’s called Martha Endell helps them find and rescue her. Micawber, who had been working for Uriah Heep, finds that he had been stealing money out of his account and had also defrauded Betsy Trotwood leading to her financial ruin. He is sent to jail for fraud. Thomas Traddles helps recover the money stolen, allowing Betsy Trotwood to return to her home in Dover. He also helps Micawber with his financial difficulties. The Micawbers emigrate to Australia, Daniel Pegotty also decides to emigrate with Little Em’ly and Martha Endell. However just before they are due to depart Ham Pegotty and James Steerforth die after getting into difficulties on the sea during a storm. It is agreed that Little Em’ly should not be told the news of her cousin’s death until she arrives in Australia.
9. David returns to Canterbury after some time abroad and soon falls in love with Agnes. They marry and are able to have a wealthy lifestyle because of David’s success as an author. They have five children, three girls and two boys.
