Taking Your Position

In her essay “A Black Fan of Country Music Finally Tells All”, Lena Williams came out of her closet, claiming her loyalty to country music to which being a black American is not supposed to be attached. The examples she has provided in the essay are the proof that being a country music fan is valid and reasonable.

Though she is somewhat embarrassed about the topic she is addressing, she “takes an unapologetic stance,” challenging her readers to take her position. Have you ever found yourself embarrassed or even scared about the thing you did that caused you to “lose face”, but you still took your position defiantly?

    I have ever had a quarrel with my best friend in public. That’s a very unforgettable thing in my mind because that’s an ashamed moment. The reason to cause the quarrel was my classmates and I stood outside of the movie theater in order to choose a movie to watch. Everybody was hesitating and then I said I wanted to see romantics. Everybody agreed beside my best friend. She suddenly yelled out and said, “Why you choose romantic movie? Because you have a boyfriend and I haven’t and you want to show off?” Her movement scared us and made a lot of people give us a strange expression in their eyes. I tried to comfort and say she could choose anyone she wanted to see. But she was out of control and blamed me. She made me couldn’t stand and had a quarrel with her although I felt very ashamed to speak loudly in public. But taking my position, I believe there were some people would do the same thing like me. Because it’s very weird that you don’t do something wrong but others blame you.

    One day, my friend told me how the other people criticize me. In the beginning, I trust her and didn’t know why they said that words to me. I decided to communicate with people who criticized me. After I talked them, I realize that my friend cheat me. At that moment, I lose my face and felt embrassed. I misunderstood them. Even so, I still keep calm down to play the role.How terrible it is.

    I remember I felt so embarrassed experience was my junior high school time. I was not study hard on my subject: history and geography. Even then, my grade was not so bad, also not so high. Anyway, caused of my seat was in front of the blackboard. Everyone all know teacher likes ask question to student seat the front row. In the history class, the history teacher discover me didn’t allow her and draw the underline on the important point. She was so angry and condemns me right now. I felt so embarrassed on that time. I think I loss face. Therefore, I was going to work hard on my two subject’s history and geography. From that moment I am so good at on this two subjects.

    In college, it’s unusual that girls do not wear makeup and dress up fashionably. As I walked through campus, every girl has their unique style of wearing clothes. A girl who wears leisure clothes with a T-shirt and a pair of jeans among them may seem to be a little weird. But it is me who like the feeling of comfortable and simple. I have ever thought about having heavy cosmetic and wearing skirt but it is not fit in with me. Everyone does have their way of thinking and I am the one who don not like to change unless it is necessary when I graduating from college and working in a company. Now, I just want to be what I think myself is and do not want to care about others’ perception toward what I am wearing.

    I have had raised a habit which is brushing my teeth after every meal since 5th grade. When I was in the elementary school, the tutor ordered us to bring our own toothbrush and cup in order to keep the teeth health and clean. We followed the rule for about 2 years, and I think it is a good habit to keep. As the first day of my junior, I was on the routine take my toothbrush and tooth glass to sink. When I was on the way to restroom, some of students take wired eyes looking on me. They must thought I was a strange girl although I was really embarrassed then, but I still finished what I was doing. Insist the right thing, not afraid others’ sight. One day they must know I am doing the right way and follow me.

    I want to talk about something about music, too. From time to time people like to listen what is new instead of what they really want. Here I want to say loudly that I love Linkinpark’s music is that illegal? Some people might think Likinpark is old fashion and out of trend. People who like their music are freaks. I have to say do you really understand what they are? Have you ever take some time use your heart and your brain to listen their music? I admit that I did use my heart my brain to listen other music, but I won’t criticize in that way. Everyone has the right to love their typical music.

    I don’t watch TV everyday; also watching some entertainment TV programs is not my hobby. So sometimes when my classmates talking about a new actor or new actress, I don’t know who are they discussing and I can’t follow. In that moment, I really feeling a little embarrassed, since it looks like I am out of fashion. However, after I seriously thought about it, I know it’s not my fault. Because there are too many movie stars, actor and actress in Taiwan, and new actors and actress are increasing day after days. In this case, I don’t know a new actor or actress is reasonable. Besides, everyone has different hobby, I don’t have to force myself do something I am not interested in for others.

    Once, I got up late for school so I just put on uniform. I was walking to one of my classes and I dropped my books. As I bent over to pick them up, I found that I wear the wrong side of my clothes. All my classmates turned in time to see my foolish behavior and they could not stop laughing for hours. At that moment, I really wanted to dig a hole to bury myself. It was the most embarrassed moment I had.

    Last time I had a quarrel with my classmate. Both of us are angry because we have misunderstandings with the other. Actually, we are tricked by another friend. When I know the truth, I want to scold that friend of using this trick and I never am her friend ever again. To tell the truth, I thought I was wrong when my classmate didn’t want to talk to me. However, after I realized it was a trick, I take my position to ask the friend why she wants to do this to me. She said she didn’t like the classmate is happy with me.

    When I was a junior high school student. There was a day, I had to finished school lately. I didn’t tell my mother at once because I totally forgot to tell her this thing. At that time, I did not have a cell phine so I made my mother standed there and waited for me about thirty minutes. When I left school,my mother yelled to me loudly. It truly made me feel embarrassed. After this event, I will tell my mother when I have to go out with my friends. Where I will go, who will be with me, and what time I will go home. It is not a big thing but I think it can makes my mother be so worried about me.

    Actually, I don’t have any idea for this topic…… I cannot remember something which is embarrassing and still take my position defiantly. But I have a lot of embarrassing evens that can share with you. One day, when I walked on senior high school’s campus, I saw a person who was my classmate and she was talking with other people. I brought a very good mood and walked toward to her. Suddenly, some ideas emerged from my brain. I wanted to give her a surprise and that was appearing from her back and scared her. The embarrassing even was happened. She was not my classmate and actually I didn’t know her. In the last, I felt so weird and just run away fast.

    Every young people like me maybe will face the same question just like our parents before? After grauted from school what should I do? Why I have to study in school, because everyone have the same degree and it makes the diplomabecome wortherless. But I wnat to say is parents are care for their children and afraid they have a tiring job in future. So they want their children study as higher as they can. However, does anyon can promise he/she can get a good job in future? I am wondering this question for many years but no one tell me and the only answer is keeping study.

    Most of people also have the embarrassing experiences in life .Last time I had a quarrel with my classmate. We had a quarrel because preparing for report. He didn’t prepare his work in the day of report; however; he blamed me and asked me why I didn’t help him to do something. I felt so angry and said: Why you didn’t to ask a help before report day, why you have to blame others expect you, you have to know that is a team work, not a game. You don’t need high scores but you have to respect others. You have to responsible to yourself because that is your work. My felt so angry and even cried out. He was scared and apologized for me. That was the first time I felt so angry. After this accident, I always felt embarrassed atmosphere when we said hello.

    Recently, I spent my own money buying a new computer. Therefore, I searched a lot of information for nearly two months and my brother give me many suggestions because my brother knew more knowledge about computer products. Finally, I bought the ideal computer.
    However, my classmate did not the brand of computer. She always said, “why do you buy this brand?” When I heard what she said at the first time, I was really unhappy. But, I told this to my brother, he said, “You don’t mind what she said. She don’t like the brand; that’s her business. ” Every time she says that again, I just listen her opinion and take my position.

    I have been through a very embarrassing event when I do my first job. As I did my first job just for three days and the store was lost money. My boss doubted the thief was me, and she talked me not to get close to the money and said some bad words to me. I was very shock about what she said. Although there were many people in the store, I just said some words very loud to fight back what she said and took my bag left that store at once!

    It was happened in 2008. I was a freshman at that time. One day, my classmates told me that there was an English speech contest, and they invited me to join the contest together. I was interested in this kind of contest so I participated in the contest with them. After signing up, I started to prepare me lecture. To tell the truth, I was really nervous because I have not been making a speech for a long time. Soon, the day was coming. There were lots of participants attended the contest. I told myself did not be nervous and tried to let myself relaxed. When it’s my turn to make a speech, I found my brain was blank. In the beginning, I did the good opening. However, I forgot my lines during the speech. At that moment, I was embarrassed that I wanted to leave stage in time. Then, I stood on the stage for few seconds and tried to remember my lines quickly. Thanks to god, I finished my speech finally. Well, that was really embarrassing.
