This week we started discussing a new rhetorical type of essay writing, which is definition. As mentioned in the book, the meaning of a word can be found in the dictionary which usually carries the explicit meaning, the word’s denotation. What the dictionary does not reveal is the word’s connotation, “its associative or emotional meanings.” While using definition in your writing, “the more specific your examples, the more concrete your definition can be.” One the other hand, you might write a good definition essay if you “experience” the definition or embody the word you’re defining.
Define an abstract term such as love or friendship, explaining how you have experienced it personally.
