In 1 Samuel 9 the people of Israel asked Samuel for a king as he was getting old and his sons didn’t follow in his steps. Samuel was very upset with their request. Thus, he went to God for advice. God told Samuel to do as they say, but warned them abut what a king will treat them. God made a list of what a king could treat his people, such as drafting the men into army or sending them into forced labors, making the women work as beauticians and waitresses and cooks, and laying taxes on their harvests, animals and property. But the people refused to God and Samuel’s warning. They wanted have a king rule over them like the nations around them. God did grand their request.
Like Samuel God was displeased with the people’s request, for they had rejected God as their King. “From the day I brought them out of Egypt until this very day they’ve been behaving like this, leaving me for other gods,” said the Lord as he tried to comfort Samuel his prophet. God did not reject what they wanted, but he was upset and angry.
The people of Israel sought another person, a king like other nations to lead them instead of depending on God completely. They asked what they wanted, but what they needed. God didn’t refuse their request, but they suffered afterwards. Do we keep nagging God over some unneeded things? Or do you seek people’s help instead of asking God’s guidance first? God may answer our annoying request, but we suffer the consequence.
