On writing definition, two notions must be kept in perspective: denotation and connotation. The former as mentioned in the textbook is the explicit meaning of a word or term which you usually look up in a dictionary. The latter, on the other hand, is “the word’s associative or emotional meanings in which you’ve experienced the word indeed.

Additionally, to make your definition paper more powerful and appealing you will use evidence (examples or stories) to illustrate your key terms and draw on a variety of sources such as a brief history of the word mentioned in the book.

Lastly, draw on the writing modes, e.g., description and narration, you’ve learned to help support your definition.
