Thursday again! If you hate some class on Tursday morning, you may wake up on the horns of a dilemma – either you go to class bored or you are marked with absent, losing two points which you do need most. If someone is on the horns of a dilemma, he or she is faced with two equally unpleasant options and has to choose one. This happend to Demeter. As her daughter was abducted by Hades, Zeus as a mediator demanded Persephone to return to her mother Demeter for two thirds of the year, during which time Demeter would grant mankind the gift of harvest. For the remaining third of the year, Persephone would stay with Hades as Queen of the Underworld. During this time, mankind would endure a harsh winter of deprivation.
Demeter thought she would lose her daughter and withdraw the gift of fertility or reunited with her daughter and offer the gift of fertility. But Zeus enabled he to break out of her mindset of “black-or-white”, selecting a “midway” or “third option”. We often evaluate people as either good or bad, and consider choices as either right or wrong (Of course, there is absolute truth in Christianity). How are you thinking in black and white terms?
