The True Commander

A day ago, hundreds of thousands of people poured into the downtown area. The protestors traveling far away from different parts of the country, mainly students, packed the square just outside the presidential office decrying the handling of a trade pack with another country. The police erected barbed wire barricades at various road junctions leading to the presidential building to prevent any break-in. The demonstration lasted for several hours and it ended peacefully. At the end of the rally one of the student leaders gave a speech calling on the president that the people were the commanders of the country, and accepted the commands of the people.

Who is the commander-in-chief of a country? Is it the president or the people? In the book of Joshua when the Israelites camped near the city of Jericho they were ready to attack, Joshua, the chief captain met with a man standing in front of him holding his drawn sword. Wondering who the man was, Joshua asked him, “Whose side are you on—ours or our enemies.” “Neither one,” the man replied. “I am the commander of the Lord’s army.” At this, Joshua fell with his face to the ground and said, “I am at your command,” for he realized that the man was God himself.

In ancient times, kings or emperors were the commanders of the kingdom. Their edicts must be executed and never be compromised. In modern days as the student leader said that the people were the commanders of the country. If the president or the government did not satisfy the expectations of the people, they would be voted down in the next election. Kingdoms and nations always come and go, but the kingdom of God endures forever. God is always seated on his throne. He is the true commander of all.
