There Is God On High

A ghost town according to the dictionary is a deserted city or town, which often used to be a business center, a marketplace bustling with all kinds of activities but later was abandoned due to natural disasters or human-caused catastrophes. If we had a chance to visit this kind of town, we wouldn’t imagine how a metropolis could become forsaken and uninhabited. We would be so inquisitive as to find out what had happened to the city and its people. Like the city of Pompeii, it is as we know a great Roman city which could be the center of business, arts and architecture; however, it was destroyed and completely buried during a catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius. How could anyone expect it would vanish in days?

Humans boast of their achievements—a highest building, a longest railroad, a strongest walled city, a swiftest aircraft or even a safest “something”. They are working so hard and attempting to exhibit their own accomplishments and preserve their own making. They do everything they can to control their own destiny. But is it possible that we mankind can do things at our disposal? One ancient philosopher admitted pessimistically that the destiny of humankind is death. What he declared was that we couldn’t overrule the divine power.

Isaiah the prophet in his days predicted the downfall of the great city of Tyre, a city like New York City that has controlled the world markets, where its merchants are all business tycoons (Isaiah 23:8). But it would come to destruction. God’s judgment brings the collapse of Tyre through the hands of the enemy of Tyre. Isaiah explicitly stated that not because the enemy of Trye was so powerful that it overcame Tyre, but the pride of Trye brought herself to ruin.

As we humans continue to advance in every aspect of our lives, are we aware there is God on high?
