Job is the protagonist in the book of Job. He had many children and servants in his household and possessed a large property. Job was upright, blameless and a man of integrity in the eyes of God. He presented offerings on a regular basis before God on behalf of his children for fear that they had sinned against God.
One day the angels of God and Satan presented themselves before God. God said to Satan, “Have you noticed my servant Job that there is none like him on the earth who fears God and shuns evil?” Then Satan answered the Lord God in a likely disdainful way, “Yes, but does Job fear God for nothing since you’ve put a hedge around him, his household, and all that he’s possessed? He’ll surely curse you to your face if you remove everything from him” (Job 1:9-10). Later on God allowed Satan to test Job by letting evil things happen to Job if he was kept alive.
From Satan’s perspective Job’s fear of God comes from the blessing and protection he has received from God. So if God takes away Job’s possessions, he will end up complaining about God and even cursing God with certainty. It is understandable that we Christians praise God for his blessings surrounding us. But what if troubles or evils things befall out of the blue? What if we like Job love God and keep His commands, but we’re still in adverse situations?
“Does Job fear God for nothing” is the phrase coming from the mouth of Satan, who “have been patrolling the earth, watching everything that’s going on” (v 7). Satan didn’t believe Job would fear God for no reason as if he knew Job better than God. As we examine our hearts once again, do we fear or love God for nothing? Do we love Jesus for no reason? Do we love God’s blessing more than God Himself? Do we love the gifts and talents God’s given us than God Himself? Do you desire God’s healing more than God Himself when we are sick?
