What do different peoples or races perceive God? For ancient Greeks God is like human beings who eat, drink, and possess emotions and feelings, except that they are extraordinarily powerful and immortal. For the Chinese God is good and pure, protecting the good and punishing the evil. Anyone who has performed great deeds and contributed the society or country could be deified and become a certain god or goddess. God doesn’t create the Chinese, but the Chinese made gods and goddesses to commemorate their achievements and contributions.
What does God look like in the Bible? A couple of his attributes we can perceive from the book of 2 Chronicles are goodness and faithful love. In chapter 7 verses 1 to 3 we read that the glory of God filled the temple after King Solomon completed the dedication ceremony. “Fire flashed down from heaven and burned up the burnt offerings and sacrifices, and the glorious presence of the Lord filled the temple” (v.1). Then the priests couldn’t enter the temple and serve the Lord. All the priests and the congregation of Israel put their kneels down and their bowed down with their faces to the ground, worshiping and thanking God, “God is good and his love endures forever.” The people of Israel knew that God is always good to his people and shows his mercy and unfailing forever. The God of Israel never gives up on his people. “The Lord is slow to anger, abounding in love” (Numbers 14:18).
Many people attempt to draw pictures of God—what is God and how is God? Or how can I approach Him? The point is not how we think of him as who he is, but what matters is that he is unchangeable—I AM WHO I AM (Exodus 3:14). God is not fearful nor fastidious, hard to be pleased. He is our loving Father taking good care of us and our best friend, trustworthy and faithful to us.
