“I Believe Therefore I Am.”

One of the sentences the students often come up with as I ask them to make a sentence in accordance with the subjective mood in English grammar is this: but for air, water, and food people could not live. Three major elements keep humans alive for thousands of years. As space programs started to develop five decades ago, the first space spot astronauts wanted to explore was the moon. They wished on day human beings could have migrated there if water could have been found. It has failed eventually but the hope still remains in the heart of many scientists that some day humans can inhabit another plant.

Indeed we need food and water to live on. This world even adds more things to us as if we would need them to keep us alive. A TV salesperson tells you that your life will be bored to death if there is no TV in your home; a cell phone seller talks you into buying one of his new gadgets so that you can enjoy fun and entertainment. Years ago a credit company promoted its card by putting out this slogan, “Don’t leave home without it!” If you have that credit card, you’re going to have everything. Do we actually need those things to keep us living like humans? How shall we really live. Paul in his letter to the Roman church said he is a servant of Jesus Christ, chosen by God to be an apostle, and set apart for the gospel of God. Paul knew who he was and what he would do in his life. More importantly he was truly aware that his life was dependant on the faith of Jesus Christ. “They righteous shall live by faith” (Romans 1:14). We all live temporarily on earth. However strong or powerful, we will die and decay physically sooner or later, but spiritually we are able to live forever. As Paul put it straight, a righteous person will live. How can we become righteous before God? If is only through the grace of Jesus Christ that we can be made right with God and we shall live eternally.

One of Rene Descartes’ quotes is “I think therefore I am.” To prove I am who I am is not because I am able to think, but because I believer—the deep faith in Christ who saves and lives forever.
