Apart from the Levites who were responsible for the Temple of God, David established his kingdom by appointing suitable leaders to be in charge of his administration. Anyone who was a mighty warrior would be in charge of a certain military division, who had accounting skills would be responsible for the financial affairs of the kingdom, who had managing skills would supervised the king’s household, and who was wise would become David’s advisor and counselor. However there was one man who didn’t hold any position in David’s kingdom but stay beside David; his name was Hushai. In 1 Chronicles 27:33 we read that Hushai the Arkite was the King’s friend.
Who was Hushai anyway? Hushai appeared several times in the book of Samuel. As David took his household and fled from the city of Jerusalem due to his son’s usurpation of the kingdom, Hushai was the person returning to Jerusalem to become a spy and even made Absalom, David’s son, listen to his advice. As a result, David was able to retake his kingdom and Hushai was one of the great helpers.
Hushai was faithful even his friend David was in trouble and lost his kingdom. He could’ve deflected to Absalom when he returned to Jerusalem and told Absalom where David was; instead he took risks of his life deceiving Absalom and collecting information for David. Furthermore, Hushai didn’t ask for a position in David’s kingdom though he could’ve done that and David would’ve honored him by answering his request.
Being followers of Christ, are we faithful and loyal to him? Do we work for Christ because we want to receive some honor or position when his kingdom comes or just because we are His friends?
