Why Opposition?

While Paul was spreading the good news of Jesus Christ throughout the whole region of Asia province, some Jews often stirred up the crowd against him and his companions. They confronted him and the gospel because of the power they were afraid to lose if the people were converted. There was another group of people outside the Jews. They were worshipers and defenders of their goddesses or goddesses. They fought against the gospel to protect their rights and interests.

In Ac ts 19:23-41 a man named Demetrius who was a silversmith afraid of losing the business of manufacturing silver shrines of the Greek goddess Artemis rounded up his workers and others employed in similar trades and told them that their business would be not only in danger of falling apart, but the temple of the great goddess Artemis would be neglected and lose its influence. Therefore he caused the city Ephesus in uproar so that Paul could not help leaving the city and headed for another city.

As Jesus sent out his disciples to preach the Kingdom of God, he told them the world wouldn’t be friendly to you like “lambs among wolves” (Luke 10:3). His disciples wouldn’t be compromised with the Devil, but just proclaimed the truth. Jesus told his disciples to warn anyone who rejected them because they would also reject Jesus and as a resul, would suffer the judgment of God (Luke 10:10-16).

When Christian share the good news with others, there is always resistance or opposition against them, sometimes even a great danger looming over them. However God’s word is trustworthy and He is faithful. Wherever they are, he will never leave them nor forsake them (Deuteronomy 31:6).
