After David brought the ark of the Lord back to his city and placed it in the tent that he pitched, he assigned some Levites to minister before the ark of the Lord, to invoke, to give thanks, and to praise the Lord (1 Chronicles 16:4). David realized after many years of long-suffering journeys that God was his ever-present help in times of trouble. That he becomes who he is depends on God alone. So he not only kept praising and seeking God himself but had the Levites whom God had chosen to serve in the temple worship before the Lord. These Levites led worship regularly before the ark of God playing musical instruments such as trumpets, cymbals, and lyres to accompany the songs of praise to God.
Like David and his “worship team”, we come before the Lord in prayer, praise, and worship for the wonderful things he has done for us and through us. As we come to pray, we pour out our thanksgivings and intercede for others as well. “Give thanks to the Lord and proclaim his greatness. Let the whole world know what he has done” (v.8). The whole human race needs to taste the grace of God and his wonderful work.
Meanwhile peace and love will take hold of our heart, and fear will vanish as we keep worshiping God and come to his presence. There is no fear in love and perfect love drives out fear (1 John 4:18). Whenever David was hunt down by Saul or surrounded by his enemies seeking the Lord was always his priority and then God became his hedge of protection. In Psalms 62:6 David said, “He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will not be shaken.”
Worshiping God also enables us to keep our focus on him and remove all the trivial thing and to leave what is the most important thing before God. As the hymn we sing,
Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.
Let’s continue worshiping him until we see his light and glory.
