“And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being” (Genesis 2:7).
Human beings share one same attribute after they were created: they seek God or some sort of deity whom they could worship or inquire of. Obviously God has breathed his spirit into every one of us so that we have a longing to converse with him and connect with the one who gives life. On the other hand, though all of the creatures on the ground, under the sea or in the air were created by God, they never received the spirit of God. They were made not to seek after or worship the Creator, but to demonstrate His power and glory.
King David was the man seeking God honestly and heartily. When he came to the city of David, he consulted with all his officials and addressed the entire assembly of Israel to bring back the Ark of God where the Lord is enthroned between the cherubim. The action he took was to seek God because the Israelites didn’t inquire of the Lord during the days of Saul. So David put the Ark of God on a cart carried by the oxen and had two men guide it, and he and all Israel worship exuberantly in song and dance. When they arrived at a threshing floor, the oxen stumbled and one of the men reached out his hand to keep the cart from falling off. But the men died on the spot instantly. David was terrified and said to himself, “How can I bring the Ark of God home to me?” (1 Chronicles 13:12).
In the Old Testament God commanded the regulations through Moses for his people to observe; anyone who disobey God’s law must be put to death. As for serving in the temple of God, the tribe of Levi was chosen to carry out duties in the temple; The Levites were supposed to carry the Ark of God. Out of ignorance David had the oxen undertake the task and thus God’s anger flared up.
There is always a right way to approach God. We don’t need to follow certain procedures as prescribed by the law of Moses in the New Testament. But in Hebrews 11:6 we read, “With faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exits and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”
If we have faith in Jesus Christ, we are eligible to draw near to him.
