Inquiring of the Lord

“Better is the end of a thing than its beginning” (Ecclesiastes 7:8).

Saul was chosen and anointed by God to be the first king of Israel. He came from the tribe of Benjamin, the youngest son of Israel, and from the most insignificant clan in that tribe as he responded to Samuel the prophet’s invitation to the congregation of Israel. Later Saul was became king of Israel and led God’s people against their enemies. But in one battle against the Philistines he was severely wound and killed himself. His armor and skull were put on display in the temple of the gods of the Philistines.

Concerning the death of Saul the Bible made it clearly, “So Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord; he did not keep the word of the Lord and even consulted a medium for guidance, and did not inquire of the Lord. So the Lord put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse” (1 Chronicles 10:13-14).  Saul led the people of Israel around forty years. In the beginning he was faithful to God, but little by little he was turning away from the Lord and the Spirit of God departed from him. He harbored bitterness and jealousy inside him and attempted to kill David. He even didn’t seek  God for guidance as God said he didn’t inquire of Him. He died in disobedience to God.

Do we seek God for guidance or instead trust our knowledge or experience or turn to other sources for help like Saul who consulted a medium? God rejected Saul as king because Saul refused to come to the King of kings and Lord of the lords.
