“Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain” (Psalms 127:1). As the apostle Paul was traveling on his mission trip, one night he had a vision in which a man pleaded with him to come to his country. Immediately he followed that vision to visit one of the cities in that country. On one Sabbath Paul and his companions went outside the city to a riverbank, whether they thought people would be gathering for prayer. As Paul was addressing a group of women, one lady named Lydia, a worshiper of God, accepted what Paul said because the Lord had opened her heart. Later Lydia and her family were baptized in the name of Jesus (Acts 16:1-15).
As we share the good news with non-believers, they take it to their hearts and believe it, not because of the eloquence of language or persuasive speech we deliver, but because the Lord God has given them their trusting hearts. We as Christians need to be cautious not to win an argument but lost the battle. Only God can turn a person’s heart to him and transform that person’s life, but we can’t.
Paul has modeled his Christian life for us; he listened for the voice of the Holy Spirit and was led by the Spirit. He is only an instrument available all the time as God’s disposal and the Lord Himself will perform his own work.
