There is a Chinese proverb saying, “The generous prefer mountains, while the wise love water.” Mountains and water or streams thus are the major theme in Chinese paintings. In today’s society of hustle and bustle of life, most people escape the city to find a peaceful and serene place where they can definitely relax and rejuvenate themselves. A nice mountain area is always one of the best city gateways.
In the Four Gospels, we read that Jesus frequently went to a mountain area to pray in the early morning before he started his daily activities, as well as in the late evening at the end of his daily ministry. He asked God and His Spirit to guide him throughout the day and gave thanksgiving to the Father for his work. In Exodus 3 of the Old Testament God appeared to Moses on Mount Sinai and commanded him to bring his people out of Egypt and worship Him at the very mountain of Sinai.
God desires his people to worship him on the mountain which is symbolic of his presence. Nowadays we don’t need to go to a real mountain to worship him, but we need a spiritual mountain where we can meet him face to face. Every Christian needs to spend time with God alone in worship and praise. After all, that is where our power come from.
