An unknown feeling of distantness ran over me while I was taking a shower last night. I was in total despair because it felt like I kept myself a long distance from the Lord. As I came out of the bathroom, my kids and I had our regular family Bible reading together. I shared with my daughters my earlier feeling of separation from God. “Didyou have your daily devotion today?” she inquired. I said yes and the feeling of distance from God made me feel abandoned and dejected.
Brother Laurence, in his book The Practice of the Presence of God, kept himself before the presence of the Lord all the time, though he was only a lowly Christian, assigned to the monastery kitchen where he was doing the tedious chores of cooking and cleaning. For him God is everything and everywhere. God can be perceived not only when we study and meditate on His Word or worship and praise Him at the church, but when we are at home and in the office or even in the park. God never leaves us nor abandons us, but we do. We want God to do our bidding ; that is, if we need him he comes; otherwise, we ask him to leave us alone, particularly we’re doing something wrong.
God has sent his only Son Jesus to us. Jesus is our love and of course he loves to stay close to us. He won’t distance Himself from us. Thus, let us draw ouselves to him.
