“Why This Waste of You Life?”

Once in a while my wife and I will warn our children not to waste their time, “Why are you hanging around in the room doing nothing? Go back to your desk and work on your homework.” We all want to be a good steward of God, managing our time and money well.

However, sometimes wasting your time and money could be a good thing. It depends on what you waste your time  and money doing.  In Mark 14:1-9  as Jesus was having dinner in a friend’s house, a woman came in with a beautiful jar of expensive perfume which could cost a year’s salary at that time. This woman broke the jar and poured the perfume on Jesus’ head. Everyone in the room was astonished and some of them were even furious exclaiming, “Why this waste of perfume? This perfume could have seen sold for well over a year’s wages and handed over to the poor” (v. 4-5). They scolded the woman harshly. But how did Jesus respond to this sudden act? Jesus said gently and firmly (I thought), “Leave her alone. Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me” (v. 6).

“She has done a beautiful thing to me.” Have you done a beautiful thing to Jesus, even others thought you’re wasting youy money or time. Giving money to the poor is a good thing, yet the money given to them is for Jesus or for your own honor. It is always worthwhile wasting our money, time and even life onto Christ.
