Last night my pastor spoke on the topic of “Being a Good and Faithful Servant” in our annual spring retreat. He quoted Proverbs 30:8-9 to illustrate his message of being a good money manager:
Second, give me neither poverty nor riches!
Give me just enough to satisfy my needs.
For if I grow rich, I may deny you and say, “Who is the Lord?
And if I am too poor, I may steal and thus insult God’s holy name.
He emphasized the focus of our life should be on God and his kingdom, not on our money and possessions. If rich, rejoice in the Lord and be generous and ready to share; if poor, rejoice in the Lord too, for the Father knows your all your needs (Matthew 6:32). “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need” (v. 33).
It was an interesting and inspiring sermon message that encourages us to set our mind on Jesus only and not on the uncertainty of riches. As I reflected on the retreat I attended and the message I listened to this morning, I found myself “indifferent” and “lukewarm” to the Spirit of God. Yes. I was at the conference hearing the sermon message, having the head knowledge of how to manage my money well, but my heart did not open to the Lord. I used my “head” to hear the Word of God, not my heart.
O Lord, I need to repent of my hard-heartedness. Soften my heart and open my spiritual eyes to see your unfailing love toward such a poor sinner like me.
