Prayer played a quite important role in Jesus’ ministry. He prayed through the night on a mountain or woke up early before dawn praying alone in the desert. Sometimes he took his disciples to pray and taught them how to pray. Many times his disciples fell asleep while Jesus was praying alone such as in the story of the transfiguration and prayer in Gethsemane. What happened to Jesus’ disciples while Jesus was praying to the Father? Were they not interested in prayer or were they too tired to pray after walking on the road and serving the people all day long?
Like the disciples we too have tons of excuses not to pray. I have many tasks, assignments, and projects to deal with, so I don’t have time to pray. I don’t have energy to pray after a hard-working day. I don’t want to get up early to pray or I get less sleep and my working conditions will suffer. I don’t have to set up a time or have not fixed time to pray because the Bible tells us to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians. 5:17); gradually I’ll stop praying.
In Matthew 26:41 Jesus says, “Watch and pray so that you’ll not fall into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Let’s stop making excuses and get down our knees and pray!
