When Minus Becomes Plus

One of the commercial slogans I’ve found most disturbing and devastating is that the more you buy, the more you save. The other day I walked into a Blockbuster store and rented two movies for class instruction. Before I checked out the movies, the cashier asked me to rent one more DVD that’ll be $150 for three movies instead $120 for two, and then I would save $30 dollars. I hesitated, struggled a little bit and said, “No, thanks! I don’t need another movie.”

In this time of decreasing economy, the government hasn’t called on its people to keep their savings and cut spending, but encourages them to increase their spending; that is, “saving the nation by spending.” The term “shopping and spending” has become the buzzword in our society.

I”m not an expert in the field of finance or economics to judge the policy of “deficit spending” whether it goes on the right track or not. In some sense, for the sake of God’s kingdom the idea of spending is more or less  right on target. In Acts 20: 35, it says that it is more blessed to give than to receive. The way to receive more God’s blessing is to give away the blessing you’ve received from God. In the widow’s mite story (Mark 13:1-2), what the woman contributed God even just a little tow coins was much more than what the rich man did.

Minus could be plus if done proplerly.
