Granny Chang

Granny Chang, who is invalid, lying in bed all the time in her eighties, could barely speak and suffers some of her memory loss. Each time visitors come to see her, her daughters would explain to her who is who and Gramma would nod her head expressing her welcome or just look at her guests doubtingly without any idea who they are. The other night my family visited Granny Chang  and as usual her daughter introduced my wife and me to her. After a while, she stared at me asking softly, “Who are you anyway?” To my surprise, she didn’t recognize me. I thought she did because I had talked to her and prayer for her a couple of times. I didn’t introduce myself again; instead, I replied to her, “It doesn’t matter who I am; I am a Christian an I believe in Jesus.”  “I believe in Jesus too,” She responded confidently.

In Psalm 73, the psalmist cried out his heart’s desire and longing for the living God who he could count on unfailingly. “Whom else have I in the heavens? None beside you delights me on earth. Though my flesh and my heart fail, God is the rock of my heart, my portion forever” (25-26). Compared to eternity, the span of our lives is extremely shorter than a watch passing in the night. We disappear like sleep at dawn as well as like grass that sprouts green in the morning, but drys out and withers by evening (Psalm 90: 5-6). However, we have the hope that is found in Jesus. He is our refuge and the rock on which the foundation of our lives is built securely.

Before I left Grammar Chang’s house, I prayed with her and she nodded her head after the prayer.
