Where They Fell Prostrate

After the whole community of Israel left Egypt one month later, they arrived in the wilderness of Zin where there was no water for them to drink.  They assembled themselves together against Moses and Aaron. They quarrelled with Moses and said, “If only we had died in the Lord’s presence with our brothers! Why have you brought the congregation of the Lord’s people into this wilderness to die, along with our livestock? Why did you make us leave Egypt and bring us here to this terrible place? This land has no grain, no grapes, no pomegranates, and no water to drink” (Number 20:3-5). No knowing what to do, Moses and Aaron went to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting and threw themselves face down on the ground. Then God answered them and spoke to them how to give water to the whole congregation.

From this story we learn that Moses and Aaron didn’t gather the leaders of Israel to cope with water shortage and Israel’s grumbling. Instead, they humbled themselves to come  before God in order to resolve the issue of contention. We must learn to fall prostrate in the Lord’s presence as trouble comes.
