Last week the Legislative Yuan passed labor pension rules which will enable Taiwan’s workers to receive a regular monthly pension after retiring. Thanking lawmakers for passing the new labor rules, the officials mentioned that it is the government’s responsibility to overhaul the system and ensure retirees receive a monthly payment, and the rules will take better care of our citizens without depending on their children in the old age.
When Samuel was getting old, the leaders of Israel came together to Samuel and requested for a king to rule over them, because the lands all around them were ruled by kings. Samuel was angry because he knew the people would put less trust in God once the king was chosen (1Samuel 8). Later on, history has proved that Samuel the prophet was right.
We all think a good government should provide well for its citizens politically, economically, and socially. If we lose our job, we would ask the government to offer more job opportunities. If we are sick, we would ask the government to provide better healthcare plans to cover doctors’ fees. All in all, we demand the government to come to our aid and do everything in our service. But, little by little, we tend to forget who our real provider is like the Israelites who showed little trust in the Lord as their leader when they had their own king.
