Last Saturday night my department was holding the annul drama contest in which students from freshman to junior are required to present their performances. One of the plays impressing me much was Beethoven’s Last Night adapted from a concept album by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. BLN IS is a fictional account of Ludwig von Beethoven’s last night on earth as Lucifer the Devil comes to claim his soul. Lucifer offers the composer a deal if he can exchange all his works of music for a dear life. At the end of the play, Beethoven tricks the Devil and still keeps his soul which he had thought lost. In the play, the audience actually saw Beethoven’s Conscience and Selfishness converse with each other, the struggle occurring inside the composer’s heart.
As Jesus was led into the desert, the Devil came to seduce him into sinning against God. The Devil promised Jesus to give him the world and its glory if Jesus worshipped him. Jesus resisted the temptations three times by quoting God’s Word, “Man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from God … Do not test the Lord your God … You must worship the Lord you God and serve him alone.” The greatest weapon to defend us and attach the enemy is God’s Word which is the sword of the Spirit.
In addition, like Beethoven’s rejection of the Devil’s offer, our gifts and talents should be used to glorify God alone rather than anyone or anything else. Every perfect gift or talent, after all, is from above coming down from the Father (James 1:17).
