Today has marked the 100th anniversary of Mother’s Day since the first official mother’s day service was held at a church in 1908. Anna Jarvis got the Mother’s Day idea as her mother said it would be nice if someone could create a special day to honor mothers. So Jarvis held a special memorial service to her mom after she died three years later. But later on, she was greatly disturbed by the increasingly commercialized way of Mother’s Day celebration – sending greeting cards, flowers, candy and other items. Jarvis was even arrested for disturbing the peace at a Mother’s Day celebration.
I can testify that dining out is still the No. 1 expense in celebration of Mother’s Day. My family didn’t eat out because the restaurant we preferred going to were all packed. My wife and I decided to go home and enjoy a home cooking meal.
