Apart from the threat of territorism abroad, Americans are facing another danger at home — the pollution of drinking water. According to one AP report, a vast array of drugs, antibiotics, and other prescription have been found in the drinking water supplies of at least 41 million Americans.
How can these drugs have gotten into the water supplies? It is believed that people have been taking drugs and flushing them unnoticed. “People think that if they take a medication, they body absorbs it and it disappears, but of course that’s not the case,” said an EPA scientist. Indeed, as people take pills, their body absorb some of the medication and the rest of it passes through and then is flushed down the toilet. The wastewater is treated before it is discharged into rivers or reservoirs. Even though some of the water is cleansed and then piped to consumers, most treatments do not remove all drug residue. Many concerns arise because the drug-laden drinking water might pose a great health risk.
