The Super Bowl is one of the biggest sporting events in America. Friends and families tend to get together in front of TV watching the game and enjoying the group atmosphere. Even churches provide their facilities for brothers and sisters to enjoy the the Super Bowl together. Prior to this year’s Super Bowl XLII, the NFL sent letters to some churches prohibiting them from showing the game on screens larger than 55 inches. This move thus stopped the churches from airing this year’s game. Later this month the NFL recanted its regulation and allowed churches to air the Super Bowl game next year on their big screens. And “many conservatives and clergy alike are now praising the NFL for overturning their position.”
What is a church, the temple of God? When Jesus entered the temple in Jerusalem, he saw people buying and selling in the temple. He angrily overturned the tables of the moneychangers and the seats of those who were selling doves. Jesus said, “My house shall be called a house of prayer and now you’re making a den of robbers.” (Matthew 21:13). God doesn’t want us to live a rigid life style; he has created the world for us to enjoy with others. But we have to be very cautious against stepping over the boundaries that God has set up to our advantage.
